Vehicle Registration Check

START WITH THE NUMBER PLATE

A registration number is the quickest place to start. Compare the official vehicle details with the advert, the V5C and the car you are viewing.

Our registration lookup is paused while the service is prepared. The guides and official links below are available now.

MATCH THE DETAILS

Does everything describe the same car?

A registration lookup can identify obvious mismatches. Follow up anything that does not line up before making a payment.

01 / DVLA

Make & model

Check the recorded make, colour, fuel type and registration details against the advert.

Check DVLA record →

02 / MOT

Test record

Use the number plate to review MOT results and mileage readings over time.

Check MOT history →

03 / AT THE CAR

VIN & V5C

The VIN on the vehicle should match the V5C. Ask for an explanation if any details differ.

A NUMBER PLATE IS A START

Check the actual vehicle.

Plates can be changed or copied. Read the official record, then inspect the VIN and paperwork in person. A matching registration alone cannot prove ownership or condition.

THE DETAILS

Registration check questions.

Can I check a vehicle by registration for free?

Yes. GOV.UK provides DVLA vehicle information, MOT history and tax status services.

Does a registration search show the owner?

No. Public vehicle enquiries do not simply reveal the current keeper’s personal details. Ask to see the V5C and verify the seller’s position.

What if the colour or model differs?

Ask why. Some changes can be legitimate, but the seller should be able to provide supporting paperwork before you proceed.
