HPI Check® is a branded product from HPI Ltd. Other companies offer their own car history reports, with different coverage and terms.
Outstanding finance
Find out whether an agreement is recorded and ask for written proof that it is settled before paying.
Insurance write-offs
A category can flag a previous total loss. Ask what happened and how the car was repaired.
Theft & mileage
Compare vehicle identity and mileage records with the V5C, MOT history and car itself.

Start with official records.
Check DVLA details, MOT history and tax status, then compare the VIN on the vehicle with the V5C. These free records are useful, but they do not answer every finance or damage question.

What can a report miss?
Records can be delayed or incorrect, and no database result describes the quality of repairs or mechanical condition. Check the report date, sources, exclusions and any guarantee terms.
When should I get a fuller report?
Once a car is on your shortlist, finance, theft and insurance damage records can be valuable. Ask the seller about any result you do not understand before committing.
