HOW IT WORKS
A sensible vehicle check starts with the registration, then continues with the car, its paperwork and the seller.
THE PROCESS
From registration to decision
Use each source of information to ask better questions. No single result can tell you everything about a used car.
Start with the reg
Enter the number plate carefully and compare the returned make, model and other identifiers with the vehicle you are viewing.
Read the history
Look for MOT patterns, mileage gaps and potential finance, write-off or theft indicators where the relevant data is available.
Check the car
Inspect the condition, service evidence, V5C and seller details. Resolve discrepancies before you commit to a purchase.
CURRENT STATUS
Live lookup is paused
We have paused the API while the site is being finished. The guides explain what to check now; when lookup is enabled, the registration box will be the starting point for available vehicle data.

GOOD TO KNOW
Before you rely on a result
Can a check replace an inspection?
No. Records show what has been reported or recorded, while an inspection can reveal current wear, damage and mechanical issues. Use both when the purchase matters to you.
What should I do if details disagree?
Pause and ask for an explanation. Compare the VIN and registration on the car with the V5C, then review dated documents and official records. Walk away if you cannot verify a material discrepancy.
Which official records can I check?
GOV.UK provides MOT history and vehicle tax checks. Our MOT guide and tax guide explain how to use those results.
