What would you like to know?

A registration check is a useful starting point. These guides help you understand the records and the checks to make in person.

01 / THE BASICS

Vehicle identity

Compare the registration, VIN and V5C details with the car in front of you. A mismatch needs an explanation before you buy.

02 / ROADWORTHINESS

MOT history

Look at test dates, recorded mileage and repeated advisories. A current pass does not guarantee the car’s condition today.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Vehicle check FAQs

What can I find with a registration number?

A registration can lead to recorded details such as make, model, MOT history and tax status. A wider history check may include finance, write-off, theft or mileage indicators, depending on the data available. Always verify the car itself.

Does a valid MOT mean a car is safe to buy?

No. An MOT pass reflects the test at that time. Check recent advisories, service records and the car’s present condition, or arrange an independent inspection.

Does the V5C prove the seller owns the car?

No. The V5C identifies the registered keeper. Match its details with the vehicle and ask for evidence of the seller’s right to sell.

Does road tax transfer when I buy a car?

No. The new keeper must tax the vehicle before driving it. Check current guidance through GOV.UK and arrange insurance as well.

What if a report looks clear?

A clear result only reflects the records checked and available at the time. It does not replace a physical inspection, paperwork review or sensible questions to the seller.

What does a mileage discrepancy mean?

It can be a recording mistake or a sign of a larger issue. Compare dated MOT entries, service invoices and the dashboard reading, then ask the seller to explain the difference.

Should I pay a deposit before checking the car?

Give yourself time to check the car, its documents and the seller first. Be wary of pressure to pay quickly or to send money to a third party.

What if the registration returns no result?

Check the characters carefully and try again when lookup is available. Imported, recently registered or incorrectly entered vehicles may need further checks with official sources.
