Checking a vehicle’s tax status is a useful step whether you own it or are considering buying it. You can use the registration number to see whether DVLA records show it as taxed or declared off road (SORN).
Check car tax status
Use the official GOV.UK vehicle tax checker. Enter the registration number and confirm the vehicle details before relying on the result. The service can also show the current tax rate for a vehicle.
Buying a used car?
Vehicle tax does not transfer when a car changes hands. The new keeper must tax it before using it on the road, even if the seller had already paid for a period of tax. Arrange insurance and check the MOT position as well. You can tax a vehicle through GOV.UK using the relevant V5C or new keeper reference.
What does SORN mean?
A Statutory Off Road Notification tells DVLA that a vehicle is being kept off public roads. A SORN vehicle cannot simply be driven away after purchase. Check the circumstances and arrange the required tax, insurance and roadworthiness before using it. GOV.UK explains when a SORN is needed.
Tax is only one part of the picture
A taxed status does not prove a vehicle is safe, insured, free of finance or owned by the person selling it. Compare the DVLA details with the advert and V5C, look at its MOT history, and inspect the car in person.
