THE PRACTICAL CHECKS
Look for a consistent identity.
A number plate alone does not prove that the car in front of you is the one described in the advert.
Check the VIN
Locate the VIN on the vehicle and compare it with the V5C. Be wary of missing, altered or inconsistent markings.
Match the details
Compare the registration, make, model and colour with official DVLA information and the seller’s advert.
Check the documents
Ask to see the V5C and service records. A V5C names the registered keeper but is not proof of ownership.
RECORDED THEFT
Know what a report covers.
A fuller vehicle history report may flag recorded theft interests. Check the report date and provider terms. A clear result cannot guarantee that every record is current, so inspect the car and documents too.
