Before buying a used car, establish that the vehicle and seller are genuine. A registration number alone cannot prove a vehicle is free to sell.
Check the identity
Compare the registration and vehicle identification number (VIN) on the car with the V5C log book and any history report. Check the make, model and colour against official DVLA information. Look for signs of tampering around VIN plates.
Check the seller and paperwork
Meet at the address shown on the V5C where practical, and ask to see identification and service records. The V5C records the keeper; it is not proof of ownership. Be cautious if the seller cannot explain missing documents or requests payment to an unrelated person.
Recorded theft data
Some commercial history reports may show a recorded stolen marker. Confirm the provider’s coverage and date. A clear result cannot guarantee that a vehicle was never stolen or cloned. If details conflict or you suspect a crime, do not buy the car; contact police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
