Outstanding finance can complicate a used car purchase. Before you pay, ask the seller whether any hire purchase, PCP or other agreement is still secured against the vehicle and request evidence that it has been settled.

Why finance matters

A seller may use a vehicle while a finance company retains an interest in it. Do not assume the V5C proves ownership: it identifies the registered keeper. A vehicle history provider may search finance records, but coverage, update times and terms vary. Read the source and check date on any report.

Questions to ask

  • Is the vehicle subject to finance now?
  • If finance was recently settled, can the seller provide a settlement letter?
  • Does the registration and VIN on the report match the vehicle?
  • Is the person taking payment the person authorised to sell?

What to do if finance is recorded

Pause the transaction. Ask the seller and finance company to clarify the balance and the route to settlement before exchanging money. Keep written confirmation. Do not rely on a verbal promise that a loan will be paid off after your purchase.

Finance is one part of a broader used vehicle check. Review MOT and mileage records, inspect the VIN and documents, and consider an independent inspection as well.
