1. Start with the registration
Write down the registration number exactly as it appears on the car. Compare the make, colour and other details using the free DVLA vehicle information service.
2. Review public records
Look up the vehicle’s MOT history and tax status. Read test dates, mileage entries, failures and advisories rather than relying on a simple pass or fail.
3. Check the car and seller
Inspect the VIN and V5C, review service records, see the vehicle in person and take a test drive where appropriate. Ask about finance, insurance write-offs and theft markers. A commercial report may help with these questions when a provider clearly states its sources and coverage.
4. Decide with the full picture
