Check if a car is SORN using the free DVLA vehicle status service. You only need its registration number to see whether it is recorded as off the road.
Check SORN status now
Use the official DVLA checker to see the recorded status. Checking a vehicle does not make a SORN application.
How to check if a vehicle is SORN
- Find the car’s registration number.
- Open the official vehicle tax and SORN status checker.
- Confirm the make and other displayed details match.
- Read the current status and any date shown.
If you have just applied, allow for the official record to update. Our car tax check guide explains the status service in more detail.
SORN check or SORN application?
These are different tasks. A status check reads the existing record. Making a Statutory Off Road Notification tells DVLA that your vehicle is being kept off the public road.
If you want to SORN your own car, use GOV.UK’s SORN application service. Its instructions cover which reference number to use and what to do if the vehicle is not yet registered in your name. Read the confirmation carefully so you know when the SORN starts.
What does SORN mean for a buyer?
The status alone does not tell you why a car has been stored. It could be awaiting repairs, used seasonally or simply not needed. Ask for the reason, storage dates and maintenance evidence before deciding whether to view.
Check the MOT history for the last recorded mileage and test outcome. Compare this with the current odometer and invoices. If the car has not moved for a long time, consider an independent inspection before agreeing a price.
Does the seller’s SORN transfer to me?
No. If you buy a vehicle and plan to keep it off the road, you must make your own SORN. If you intend to use it on the road, arrange the required tax, insurance and MOT position first. Follow the official instructions for your circumstances.
Plan collection before paying
Ask where the vehicle is stored, whether a recovery vehicle can reach it and whether it can move safely. Include transport and likely recommissioning costs in your budget. Do not assume an ordinary road test or drive home is allowed because the seller has agreed to it.
GOV.UK describes a limited exception for a SORN vehicle travelling to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. Check the full rules and insurance requirements before arranging any journey.
SORN check questions
Is a SORN check free?
Yes. Checking the recorded status using the official service is free.
Can I SORN a vehicle just by checking its registration?
No. A lookup only reads the status. Use the official application process to declare a vehicle off the road.
Does SORN prove the car has been maintained?
No. Ask for servicing and repair evidence, inspect the current condition and review the wider vehicle history.
